Press Breaker - Screening and Panel Discussion

Press Breaker - Screening and Panel Discussion

All are invited as part of Sikh Heritage Month celebrations to take part in a film screening of “Press Breaker” followed with a panel discussion.

The movie is the true story about Harleen Sidhu, who was an average young girl from Surrey, BC’s South Asian dominated Newton neighbourhood. She loved her family, her culture, and – like many South Asian Canadians – she loved the sport of basketball. At the young age of 13, Harleen found herself thrust into the Canadian national spotlight after she led her Grade 8 basketball team to an undefeated regular season in 2004, shortly after which she was effectively banned from participating in the biggest tournament of her young career. She rallied alongside her school and community to fight the decision, garnering widespread media attention in the process. The first of many battles over the course of her playing career, Harleen went on to play NCAA Division I basketball and came back home for a storybook ending.

The panel discussion following the film screening, featuring Harleen, filmmakers, and moderated by Dr. Sharanjit Kaur Sandhra, will tackle issues of gatekeeping and racism in University/community sport and the ways to overcome systemic barriers.

Not Sikh Enough - Finding a Sense of Belonging and Sangat

Not Sikh Enough - Finding a Sense of Belonging and Sangat

Surrey and Metro-Vancouver are home to the biggest Sikh diaspora in North America. We all come from different walks of life, but one common identity unites us. However, many people can feel unsafe of disenfranchised in Sikh spaces. They may want to participate in their own community, but they may be deemed "not Sikh enough." Have you ever felt this way?

In honour of Sikh Heritage Month, 5X is partnering with Sikh Heritage BC to create a space for people in the community to come together, heal, and talk about what Sikhi means to them. This is a safe space where people can come as they are, no matter who they are, and engage in a community discussion led by Manveer Singh, followed by a grounding meditation. This event takes place on the Unceded Territories of the Semiahmoo, Katzie, Kwikwetlem, Kwantlen, Qayqayt and Tsawwassen First Nations
